Charleston Museum

The Charleston Museum has the pleasure of being dubbed America’s First Museum. A source of pride for South Carolinians, the Charleston Museum boasts both deep history and relevant contemporary archives which allow visitors an incomparable glimpse into both the colonial past and modern-day America.

Originally founded in 1773 while still a British Colony, the Charleston Museum was established shortly after the British Museum’s founding in 1759 and aimed to highlight the treasures and emerging histories of life in the New World. Today, the imposing brick structure houses a vast array of Charleston furniture, silver, and Low Country textiles, which make the Charleston Museum a beacon to all those interested in learning about the early life and times of the Colonial Era. In addition, the museum, with its impressive whalebone skeleton hanging high overhead, offers visitors a glimpse into the days of Pequot and Moby Dick, when the area was host to extensive whaling efforts.

Also on site are three historic properties: the Heyward-Washington House (“Charleston’s Revolutionary War House”), the Joseph Manigault House (“Charleston’s Huguenot House”), and the Dill Sanctuary which contains assorted habitats for wildlife and numerous cultural features including three earthen Confederate batteries and prehistoric, colonial, antebellum, and postbellum archeological sites. Each of these sites is a unique museum unto itself, and greatly enhances any visit to the Charleston Museum.
