Winchester Mystery House

The now famous Winchester mansion is one of San Jose's most interesting attractions. Built by a grieving widow named Sarah Winchester, many believe the premises to be haunted by the ghosts of those killed by the guns produced by Winchester rifles. Under construction for nearly 40 years and never finished, while exploring the unfurnished 160 room house with 47 fireplaces and 10,000 windowpanes, you can see stairs that lead to nowhere and doors in the ground.

The number 13 rears itself at seemingly every turn, with candlesticks that accommodate 13 candles, rooms with 13 windows, even kitchen sinks with 13 drain holes.

If you happen to be in the neighborhood around Halloween or on a Friday the 13th, flashlight tours allow you to explore the premises with the creepy ambiance a haunted house should have. Just be sure to book your tickets ahead of time, as these offers tend to sell out very quickly, otherwise feel free to show up any time.
