Lin Family Garden

In Taiwan’s old days, wealthy residents often lived in elaborate Chinese-style mansions surrounded by extensive gardens. Nearly all of these historic houses have been destroyed by weathering, war and neglect, but the Lin Family Garden represents the best preserved surviving traditional Chinese garden mansion.

The Lin Family Garden was built from 1888 to 1893, inspired by the current architectural styles of the Qing Dynasty. Pay special attention to the mansion’s highly ornamented exterior. Much of the brightly painted carved wood ornamentation resembles the style of China’s Fujian and Guangdong Provinces. The asymmetrical gardens were designed to make the residents feel closer to nature, making it quite different from Western-style manicured gardens.

The Lin Family Garden and mansion are open to visitors every day except the first Monday of the month and on major national holidays. You’re free to tour the gardens on your own, but if you’d like to see the mansion’s interior, you’ll have to sign up for a free tour.
