Great trip. We were a party, of 5 .Qor guide ,explained in Spanish, and in English ,from the time we got into the van at our, pick up at Hotel Secrets ,and until we were dropped off .Ek Balam,is a great site, very few people,go there, you have the site to yourself.I did, climb, the main Pyramid. It, took about 10 minutes. You must be careful going up and down. There is nothing to hold on to.I,went up and down side ways. There is a shrine ,halfway up,the Pyramid,if you, don't want to go all the way to the top.Enjoyed ,my time there.we also spent about 1/2,and hour at the city Valladoid. The church, was the main ,observation to see,Very, nice old church.
We had an excellent tour led by Alejandro. Not only did we learn about Mayan history but Mexico, her regions and some other places to visit in Mexico. Our tour was small only 5 of us, thus we went in a small van. We had time to ask questions as we walked through Ek Balam. Alejandro was very patient and allowed us time to take pictures and not rush us when we climbed the main structure.
Ek Balam is a gem. Not crowded and the ruins were phenomenal. You are allowed to climb several of the sites and the views from the top of the main structure are breathtaking. You can see nothing but jungle and come to appreciate all the work to clear the jungle away. Only a small percentage of Ek Balam has been restored.
The engravings that were uncovered on the main structure are amazing. This has to be one of our favorite ruins on this trip. We have been to Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam.
We had around 40 minutes to walk around Valladolid on our own before going back to Cancun with door to door service. This was enough time to do some shopping or get a quick bite to eat.
