We had a private driver who knew Rime quite well. We purchased tickets to the Vatican Museum and Collusium in advance which helped us skip the lines. Our visits to certain areas was short, but that was the only way we could see and make all the stops we wanted to see most of Rome. Our driver recommended a great Authentic Italian restaurant with homemade pasta on the menu. It was a great day!
It was awesome to have your own transportation. But, I paid approximately 800 dollars, and it truly was pick you up, drop you off, give you tickets, and then you go off on your own. He did tell us a few things, and our driver was nice, but just was nothing more than a cab driver. I think we could have saved quite a bit of money buying the tickets on our own. It wasn't worth the money we paid for this excursion. The Colosseum was amazing and the skip the line was well worth it. Our teenage boys did not like visiting the Vatican. The museum was extremely long, and it was so hot and packed with people. It was like being in a cattle drive with no way out. It was great visiting the Sistine Chapel, but it is at the very end. I think the boys would have been great just seeing the colosseum.
Skip the line is essential! This tour was worth every penny! I can't imagine trying to find parking or waiting in line to see these magnificent museums! Our tour guide met us at the cruise ship port and took us directly to the front door of the Vatican, the Colosseum, The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and more. We didn't have a lot of time to spend in Rome, but I felt like we were able to see what we came to see. Highly recommend.
This is only transportation from the pier to Vatican City and the Colosseum it is not a tour.
On the plus side, if you only have one day in Rome and want to do more than drive by the Vatican and the Colosseum, this is a great way to do it.
On the negative side, the tour operator sent our driver to the wrong ship. It took 3 calls and about 30 minutes to get it sorted out.
After the initial greeting at the pier, our driver hardly spoke. There was no overview of the day's itinerary or even small talk. Had we not asked about a bathroom stop 45 minutes into the drive, I'm not sure he would have spoken at all before reaching Vatican City.
The description mentions the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain when we asked about stopping there, we were told that they were not included in the tour. We did in fact drive by the Spanish Steps but would never have known it if not for a member of our group having been there before and pointing it out. We did specifically ask for a stop at the Trevi Fountain, which our drive was able to accommodate.
If all you need is transportation and tickets to the Vatican Museum and the Colosseum, this is good. If you want a guided tour, look elsewhere.
Our group of 7 people enjoyed a wonderful day in Rome with Fabrizio Rossi as our driver in August 2017. He is essentially a tour guide with lots of information on historical and cultural background of sights, current events and interesting news about life in Italy, and practical logistics for your excursions. He is very polite, friendly, attentive, flexible and willing to customize your itinerary, energetic, and speaks excellent English. We were able to visit the inside of St. Peter's Basilica after our Vatican Tour by following Fabrizio's advice, and also got to briefly see a couple of other sights in Rome Pantheon and Piazza Navona that were not on the itinerary, instead of entering inside the Colosseum. Such changes to the itinerary may not always be possible, but even if you like to do something as simple as stopping for gelato or going to a certain restaurant, Fabrizio will make it work for you. The Mercedes van that we rode in was very comfortable, and the air conditioning worked well on a very hot day. I highly recommend the excursion, as well as Fabrizio Rossi as the driver!
It was only after taking other tours after this one we realized that we were way over charged for what we ended up getting. I would not recommend this tour. Don't let the skip the line fool you. The Vatican museum is a set time that we had to go to. Our driver said he tried to change the time but could not. For what we paid for this day it was horrible timing. I feel like all we got was a driver to take us from point to point. and with the heat it was nice not to have to walk. We could have done that on our own and saved a lot.
The driver was not very talkative nor provided much information- and both times we were ready to depart we had to remind him about our tickets. Since the museum time was at 10:45am we basically had to kill time until then. We should have gone to the church first, but the driver felt there was not enough time. So the timing of the ticket was not good for what we paid for this day . By the time we left the museum to go to the church the line was over an hour long in the hot, hot, sun. We wasted to so much time waiting in line. NOTE: there is no ticket for the church. You must wait in line to go through security.
He then dropped us off for a speedy lunch since we had wasted so much time in line and then drove us to the Colosseum and told us where to meet him and when. It did not appear that he had been to the Vatican museums nor church. I would recommend finding a local company to tour with.
Bait and switch tactic from the local tour operator. We paid to visit three major sites in Rome : Vatican , Coliseum and Trevi Fountain . Our driver Martin , took us only at two Trevi Fountais were erased by him from the tour claiming that there is no time for all three sites. The visiting time of each site and meeting points were set by him . We were at the meeting points at least 15 minutes in advance. No traffic jams or any other evens that could've affect the itinerary change, just pure carelessness and poor time management .Will never use Viator again.
