I have extremely limited mobility and use a walker. There were many tours from which to select, offering early morning before the crowds access to the Sistine Chapel. I called several, but was told by the lady at Viator that this would be the best - that there was access, through a dedicated door, directly into the Sistine Chapel, without going through any of the Museums. For this I paid 176 for three of us. It turns out, the dedicated door is the entrance used by all other early morning tours, and once inside, there was a walk of 1/2 mile through Museum Corridors, to gain access to the Sistine Chapel. Of course, once finished, the only way out was back through the same 1/2 mile Corridor. I know the mileage to be true, for each of my daughters was wearing a mileage tracking device on her wrist. I feel I was totally ripped off by the Viator Representative with whom I booked the tour, and will not recommend Viator to anyone, ever.
Chaotic. The tour guide was very late showing up to the meeting point. Check in was badly disorganized. No instructions were given for ticketing. In all our entry was delayed an hour. Eventually, tickets in hand, we headed in on our own. Museum and chapel were wonderful but entry was not as promised
The tour rep was late arriving. We were instructed to be there 15 to 20 mins before the scheduled time, she turned up 10 mins late! Then there was her total disorganisation. I have no idea how many people were booked on to the tour or how many sub-divisions of bookings there were plain tickets, tickets and guide books, tickets/guide books and audio guides but we were moved from spot to spot and told to just wait whilst she got on with whatever it was she went to do! Then we went through repeated bouts of her calling traveller names out to issue tickets, guides, audio guides, etc with all the expected mispronunciations and delays. Ultimately we decided to depart the group by ourselves once we had our tickets as more and more people were pouring in and the place was starting to get busy which is what the early start is intended to avoid!. To summarise - guide a waste of time and totally disorganised. Expenditure worth it to avoid the queues and serious crowds that come later but a lot of money for what was just an early start. There must be a better way to do this - two days later we did a night time tour of the Colosseum with Tickitaly. The company behind this tour Gray Line I think could learn a lot from examining the competition.
Viator is a great for booking, the tour operator they used was a joke. Carrani Tours showed up mins before our 720 time. We entered the Vatican at 740. They messed around for 20mins with maps/audio. Most ppl were super annoyed by how unorganized it was. We ditched the guide inside and went solo.
To start off, the tour operator Grey Line was totally disorganized. We were to meet at 7 a.m., they showed up about 7:15. It seems that a guide or guides did not show up, but they weren't telling us anything. They were managing a few tours at the same time and they kept separating us into groups and rearranging us. Finally at 7:40 they took us into the museum, where they ran around again, reorganizing us, giving some of us audio devices, some got paper maps, some of us got nothing. Obviously the group was getting grumbly at the inefficiency and lack of communication from the operators. Those of us who got nothing were told to go up those stairs. No further instructions. We just followed some other tour company and the signs pointing to the Sistine Chapel. Horrible service!!!
THAT SAID, were were the FIRST ONES in the Chapel! It was simply marvelous, magical, mystical!! For at least a half hour, there only about 50 of us in there. BTW- no one gets in the Chapel before 8 a.m., regardless of what the ads say. With this ticket, you are then on your own for the rest of the museum, and if you want to see the maps and other galleries including the Raphael rooms - DO NOT MISS! you have to go all the way around museum again, which means doing the whole thing twice, which is quite a hike.
All in all, I WOULD buy this ticket again, just to be in the Chapel alone. When we went through the the Chapel the second time after going around the again in order to see Raphael rooms - no other way out, the crowds were horrible, noisy, hot, taking flash pictures and getting reprimanded by guards over loudspeakers, etc. YUK! Just be forewarned and know how to get to the Chapel yourself. Do your homework and get your own map of the frescos, download your own audio tour and soak up the beauty and immensity that no picture can ever capture. We went June 1, 2017.
